8089 Champoeg Road Northeast, St. Paul, OR
Built in 1852 on a rise overlooking Champoeg Heritage State Park, the Robert Newell House preserves the legacy of “Doc” Newell, a mountain man, fur trader, Oregon Trail pioneer, and the first Speaker of the Oregon House who helped draft the state’s earliest constitutions and hosted civic gatherings under its roof. Restored and opened as a museum by the Oregon State Society DAR in 1959, this two-story home now showcases mid-19th-century textiles, furniture, and pioneer artifacts donated by descendants of Oregon settlers, along with a small collection of Native American pieces. Beyond daily tours, the historic interiors and surrounding gardens provide an unforgettable setting for intimate events and country weddings, offering guests a vivid glimpse of frontier life while celebrating their own milestones in Oregon’s storied heartland.
