Mt. Angel sits in the rolling hills of the north Willamette Valley in North Marion County, on Highway 214 along Oregon's Scenic Silver Falls Tour Route. You're minutes from the waterfalls of Silver Falls State Park and about an hour from the coast. You're also in the most Bavarian town in Oregon, settled by German and Swiss families in the 1880s and still run by their descendants.
Downtown, the Glockenspiel is the tallest in the country, with hand carved figures that come out at 11, 1, 4, and 7 daily. Up on the butte, the Benedictine monks at Mount Angel Abbey have a library designed by Alvar Aalto and a brewery where they pour their own beer. And every September the town hosts the largest folk festival in the Pacific Northwest, four days of Oktoberfest that draw around 350,000 people to a town of 3,500.
There are only a few breweries in the country that are owned and operated by monks and the Valley's very own Benedictine Brewery is one of them! The brewery uses locally sourced hops grown on Abbey land and water from the monks' well. This local destination is even more special as the community built the building framework from 14,000 feet of Douglas fir harvested from the Abbey tree farm.
