The Pioneer Mothers Memorial Cabin was built in 1929 on the banks of the Willamette River to honor the women who braved the Oregon Trail. Opened to visitors in 1931 by the Oregon State Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, it was meant to anchor a scenic river by-way that never materialized because of the Great Depression. The cabin is a romantic, larger-scale replica of the George Aplin family home built after the 1861 flood, giving today’s guests room to step inside and imagine pioneer life. In 2013 generous donors helped move the building to Newell Pioneer Village, where it reopened in 2015 as a museum celebrating the resilience and contributions of Oregon’s earliest settler families.
